Step-by-Step Overview
Start with a Framed LayoutOn a fresh page, sketch a vertical rectangle in the center. Add a small square or title block at the top — this creates a notepad-like frame for your floral design. Use a dot grid to help keep everything centered.
Draw the VineBegin building your vine by sketching loose, messy stems. Add in scraggly leaves by wiggling your pen slightly as you draw. There’s no need to aim for perfection — in fact, the charm of this illustration is in its relaxed and organic look.
Add Berries and Fill the SpaceOnce your vine has taken shape, add little groupings of round berries to fill in gaps. Keep branching outward with more stems and leaves, or add a second vine and weave it through your first. You can make this design as full or as minimal as you like.
Work in Pen (Optional)While this project can be done in pencil first, it’s also a great opportunity to draw directly in pen. The shapes are simple and forgiving, making it ideal for working loosely and freely.
A Meditative Practice
This floral vine isn’t just a lovely design element — it’s also a calming drawing practice. Let yourself get lost in the repetition of lines and shapes. If your hand shakes or your lines wobble, it only adds to the charm. For many of us, this kind of simple drawing is a vital part of creative self-care.
Bonus Idea: Cut-Out Window Page
Take your journal spread to the next level by turning your floral frame into a cut-out window. This is a fun way to add layers to your journal — or to create a handmade greeting card with a view-through detail. Simply cut out the interior of your rectangle once your drawing is complete and place another design behind it.
